You don’t have to worry about a painful day in the dentist’s chair. New technologies and techniques make the process of receiving a crown pain-free, but there are a few things you should know before your treatment.

What is a Dental Crown?

A single dental crown is the most widely used restorative procedure because of its versatility and effectiveness. A crown is a customized cap that’s bonded over the entire surface of a tooth above the gum line. Your dentist may recommend the restoration for various reasons, like:

  • Protect a weakened tooth
  • Treat a large cavity
  • Treat a break or fracture
  • After a root canal
  • Support a dental bridge

Your restoration will be made of high-quality ceramic. Although it won’t contain any metals, it will be durable while producing natural-looking results.

What to Expect When Getting a Dental Crown?

You don’t have to schedule multiple appointments or worry about a long procedure. CEREC technology allows you to get the dental crown you need in just one day. After your initial consultation, you are scheduled for your procedure.

Your dentist will keep your comfort as their top priority. They may use a local numbing agent to block discomfort as your tooth is reshaped and prepared for the restoration. Once your tooth has been prepped, they will take a quick, painless digital impression of your mouth to get the information necessary to create your crown.

The imaging equipment works along with CAD/CAM technology, which your dentist will use to customize your restoration to fit your tooth like a glove and blend in with your remaining teeth. The information is sent to an in-office milling machine, where your crown will be cut from a single block of all-ceramic material. In about an hour, your crown will be ready to be bonded to your tooth. You won’t have to worry about a temporary restoration or a second appointment. You’ll walk out of the office with a healthy, beautiful smile.

Recovering from a Dental Crown

Although you won’t feel anything during your procedure, your tooth may be a little tender for a few days. You can manage any discomfort using an over-the-counter pain reliever. Eat soft foods until any tenderness subsides. In no time at all, your crown will feel like a natural tooth, and you may soon forget it is even there.

Don’t delay your dental crown procedure if you’re concerned about pain. From start to finish, your dentist will provide the comfortable, compassionate care you need to rehabilitate your smile.
